As a selective school our main focus is upon academic achievement with over 95% of our students leaving us to take up university places. Our teaching is dynamic and active and we seek to produce intellectually curious, independent learners. We are however, much broader in our outlook, having excellent arts and physical education reputations (we are the top athletics team in the country for both juniors and intermediates (2008 and 2009) and came third at the World Schools Athletics competition in June 2009). Macmillan was founded in 1843 by Daniel and Alexander Macmillan, two brothers from the Scottish Isle of Arran. Daniel was the business brain, while Alexander laid the literary foundations, publishing such great authors as Charles Kingsley, Thomas Hughes, Lewis Carroll, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Henry James, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling and H. G. Wells. As the company evolved, the Macmillan family’s vision continued to inspire the publishing of major writers including W. B. Yeats, Sean O’Casey, John Maynard Keynes, Charles Morgan, Hugh Walpole, Margaret Mitchell, C. P. Snow and Rumer Godden. The brothers’ publishing talents were not confined to literature. Their vision led to the creation of enduring copyrights such as Nature (1869), the renowned Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1877) and Palgrave’s Dictionary of Political Economy (1899).

An ambitious expansion programme was initiated in the late 1960s when Harold Macmillan retired from politics after his term as prime minister and became chairman of the company. Serious academic, educational and literary publishing was followed by significant growth in reference programmes and college textbooks as well as educational and scientific journals. New international opportunities were grasped and publishing operations were set up in Japan, Mexico and the emerging markets of Africa and Asia. Nowadays Macmillan is one of the largest and best-known international publishers in the world, operating in over 70 countries.

Natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami, floods and storms destroy lives and damage economies across the globe; pandemics have the potential to bring death and suffering on an unprecedented scale; while climate change may increase the severity of both natural and health disasters. How society sees risk, how to link understanding of the causative mechanics to statistical approaches, and how to increase resilience and reduce the risk of disasters are common themes cutting across research in natural, environmental, health and technological hazards. Reducing global risks and disasters presents a colossal challenge that requires coordinated and collaborative action.

UCL is uniquely well-placed to lead research and teaching in risk and disaster reduction, with at least 70 academics across 12 departments and seven faculties involved in world-class research and practice in the field. To maximise the impact and value of our activities in risk and disaster reduction, and to increase and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and cooperation, we propose to bring together individual areas of expertise, under the umbrella of a UCL Institute for Risk & Disaster Reduction, built around established centres across UCL.

The students traditionally come from surrounding Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire villages which are mainly dormitory villages for Grimsby and the South Bank industrial estates. The vast majority of the housing in the area is privately owned. The original School was opened in 1937 for 300 pupils, all other buildings being erected in the 1970s, with the recent additions of specialist accommodation. The curriculum organisation of the Academy is based on Curriculum Areas, each having a suite of rooms within the various teaching blocks. The Curriculum Areas are: English, Maths, Science, Art, Business, ICT, Citizenship, History, Geography, RE, Modern Languages, Music, PE, Special Needs and Technology. Pastoral care in the Academy is organised on a ‘vertical’ House System. Heads of House and their teams work to the Senior Pastoral managers.”
