Debating Matters is a national schools debating competition for sixth form students that adopts a unique approach to debate, putting students under pressure to engage in debate about key issues facing society in an intellectually rigorous way, emphasising the importance of content over style.
After three days of lively debates with leading experts and student debaters from across the country, students from St. Francis Xavier’s College in Liverpool, have emerged victorious, selected as champions of the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters competition 2010/11 by prestigious judges.

A group of argumentative teenagers from Nottingham have championed in the regional finals of ‘the toughest debating competition in the country’, having entered for the first time this year. The triumphant team have not only won their school prestige, but will be taking home £500 worth of books and resources for their school library and a place at the competition’s prestigious three day final in London.
01 Apr 2011: Ballymoney debaters triumph in Edinburgh
After a fierce and challenging day of debate and discussion Dalriada School from Ballymoney have triumphed at the Scotland and Northern Ireland Final of the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters Competition, held at the Informatics Forum at the University of Edinburgh.
After an intense day of discussion and reasoned argument, four sixth form students from the The Ridgeway School in Swindon have triumphed as debate champions of the West and South Wales Regional Final of the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters Competition. The team have not only won a place at the National Final, a three day residential event in London, but have also bagged £500 worth of books and resources for their school library.
After a fierce day of debate in London, students from Burgate School and Sixth form centre, triumphed at the final round of the London regional final of the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters Competition – sponsored in the region by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
15 Mar 2011: Gods of debate
After five years in the waiting Godalming College have triumphed at the South East Regional Final of the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters Competition, sponsored in the region by Canterbury Christ Church University. The team from Surrey will now be taking their place at the prestigious National Final in July.
12 Mar 2011: Saints of debate
Four debaters from St Francis Xavier’s College in Liverpool have triumphed at the North West and North Wales Regional Final of the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters Competition, sponsored in the region by the Economic and Social Research Council. The team will now be taking their place at the prestigious National Final in London in July and have also won £500 worth of books and educational resources for their school.
After a fierce day of debate in Cambridge, students from Uppingham School in Rutland emerged victorious, chosen as debating champions by prestigious judges in the East Regional Final of the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters Competition on Monday 7 March.
After a fierce day of debate in Newcastle, students from Durham Johnston Comprehensive School, narrowly emerged victorious, chosen as North East & Yorkshire champions by prestigious judges. The North East & Yorkshire region of the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters Competition is sponsored by Eaga.
