21 Mar 2018: Cirencester College triumphant at Debating Matters Cardiff Championship
Gloucestershire school victorious after long day of high-quality debate
Congratulations to Cirencester College who won through to to be crowned Debating Matters Cardiff Champions 2018 hosted by the Welsh National Opera at Wales Millennium Centre on Wednesday 14 March.
Having competed in Debating Matters for several years, students from Cirencester College were delighted to lift the trophy having impressed judges with their smart arguments and quick thinking throughout the day. Cirencester won debates in the group stages arguing artistic expression should never be censored and that we shouldn’t build on the green belt. That put them through to face Truro School in a fantastic semi-final, on if social egg freezing empowers women. Having made it through, the final proved a close affair with Cirencester battling New College Swindon on whether cultural appropriation should be welcomed. After a fine debate, with fantastic contributions from schools in the audience, the judges announced Cirencester the winners.
Though only one team could be overall winners, all the competing schools made interesting and provocative points from the floor throughout the day.
Debating Matters would like to thank all 12 competing schools and their teachers: New College Swindon, Holy Trinity Academy, Ysgol Gyfun Plasmawr, Truro School, Cardiff Sixth Form College, Cirencester College, Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital, Kingsley School Bideford, Stanwell School, and Exeter College.
We would also like to extend a big thank you to our partner, Welsh National Opera and the Wales Millennium Centre, who offered several impressive judges on the day. Thank you also to all the judges and individual judges who gave up their time to help quiz the students.
