09 Nov 2017: Debating Matters Championships in 2018
The Academy of Ideas is delighted to announce the first Debating Matters Championship events to take place across the country in 2018
For the academic year 2017-2018, we are launching standalone Debating Matters Championship competitions across the UK. Each championship will take place on a single day and in a single venue, and will increase the number of students, teachers and judges that come together in one flagship event. These tournaments will act as a beacon to encourage debating in many more schools locally. We will encourage a collegiate and competitive atmosphere at each championship, creating a buzz by intellectually engaging each region’s most ambitious young debaters to discuss the most pressing social, scientific, political and cultural issues. More Championships will be announced soon!
Debating Matters is pleased to announce, alongside our London South Championship at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, an Oxford Championship, Liverpool Championship, and Yorkshire Championship. At each championship, 12 schools will have the opportunity to battle it out for the crown of champions of their local area as they tackle a number of difficult topics over the course of a rigorous day of debate. Applications will open to schools soon. If you would like to take part please register interest ASAP as places are limited. Email Bernie Whelan at email@example.com to do so.
The London South Championship on 24 January at St. Mary’s University, Twickenham, will launch the new Championships.
The Debating Matters Liverpool Championship will be hosted by the University of Liverpool on 20 March and will be our largest event to date in Liverpool. We are also partnering with Immunocore to produce this Championship.
Finally for now, building on our strong base in Yorkshire, Debating Matters returns to Leeds Beckett University on 28 March for our Yorkshire Championship. We will once again be partnering with The Leeds Salon to bring you this event.
