27 Nov 2017: Debating Matters London North and Cardiff Championships Announced

The Academy of Ideas is delighted to announce two more Debating Matters Championships to take place in 2018.

Firstly, we are partnering with Brunel University for the Debating Matters London North Championship on 5 March 2018. Then a couple of weeks later, we head to the Welsh National Opera for the Debating Matters Cardiff Championship on 14 March 2018.

For the academic year 2017-2018, we are launching standalone Debating Matters Championship competitions across the UK. Each championship will take place on a single day and in a single venue, and will increase the number of students, teachers and judges that come together in one flagship event. These tournaments will act as a beacon to encourage debating in many more schools locally. We will encourage a collegiate and competitive atmosphere at each championship, creating a buzz by intellectually engaging each region’s most ambitious young debaters to discuss the most pressing social, scientific, political and cultural issues.

The London North and Cardiff Championships join our London South, Oxford, Liverpool and Yorkshire Championships previously announced. At each championship, 12 schools will have the opportunity to battle it out for the crown of champions of their local area as they tackle a number of difficult topics over the course of a rigorous day of debate. If you would like to take part please register interest ASAP as places are limited. Email Bernie Whelan at to do so.

The London North Championship at Brunel University, London, on 5 March 2018 is a part of the ‘Knowing our Rights’ research project, which aims to provide analysis, and to deepen and increase understanding, of the application of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in the UK. Debates at the London North Championship will take on a human rights theme.

The Cardiff Championship at the Welsh National Opera on 14 March brings Debating Matters back to Wales. The Welsh National Opera transforms lives through the power of opera. They are passionate about opera and want to share this passion with as many people as possible, making them a fitting home for the Cardiff Championship.
