09 Oct 2017: Debating Matters London South Championship in partnership with St Mary’s University
The Institute of Ideas is delighted to announce the first Debating Matters Championship at St Mary's University, Twickenham on 24 January 2018
Debating Matters is pleased to reveal the first of our new Championships is to be held at St. Mary’s University, Twickenham, at the beginning of 2018. Twelve schools will have the opportunity to battle it out for the crown of Debating Matters London South Champions as they tackle a number of difficult topics over the course of a rigorous day of debate. Applications will open to schools soon, check the Debating Matters website and watch out for an email with details of how to apply for this championship.
For the academic year 2017-2018, we are launching standalone Debating Matters Championship competitions across the UK. The London South Championship will be the first of a series of similar events across the country. Each championship will take place on a single day and in a single venue, and will increase the number of students, teachers and judges that come together in one flagship event. These tournaments will act as a beacon to encourage debating in many more schools locally. We will encourage a collegiate and competitive atmosphere at each championship, creating a buzz by intellectually engaging each region’s most ambitious young debaters to discuss the most pressing social, scientific, political and cultural issues.
Based in leafy Strawberry Hill, St Mary’s University, Twickenham is a thriving academic environment where every student is valued, encouraged and supported. Rated Silver in TEF, St Mary’s is proud to be a teaching-led institution. With over 95 per cent of graduates employed in six months, the campus offers students the best of both worlds - a tranquil setting that’s only a short journey from Central London.
Debating Matters judge and director of the Centre for Bioethics and Emerging Technologies at St Mary’s University, Dr Trevor Stammers, said of the London South Championship:
“Debating Matters is a great forum to learn how to make a sound argument rather than just spin sound bites. Learning to reason clearly and defend your case is an essential life-skill. St Mary’s offers an inclusive academic community where our teaching is student focused and encourages students to realise their true potential; it’s great to be hosting this competition which helps to understand others so we might better understand ourselves.”
Vice Chancellor Prof Francis Campbell said:
“The ability to structure a cohesive argument and debate the merits of different perspective with your peers is a vital skill, which brings benefits throughout your life. I am delighted that St Mary’s is able to be involved in this, I am sure it is an experience that will stay with the participants as they begin their further education journeys.”
