28 Jun 2010: Global Uncertainties Competition

Debating Global Uncertainties with a fiery pen!

Following a successful series of debate events across March and April, the Debating Matters Global Uncertainties School Network is launching an exciting competition that will see students from across the country go head-to-head in a written ‘clash’ of opinion.

As a rejoinder to the fascinating debate events that students had on some of the key themes of the RCUK Global Uncertainties Programme - on terrorism, ideologies and beliefs and cyber-security – Debating Matters has called on students to further develop their arguments by taking part in a head-to-head exchange with students from other schools. Each student who enters will engage in a lively written exchange with a randomly selected partner, with one student arguing for and one against a given motion. The students who produce the best exchange under any given theme, as judged by fellows of the Global Uncertainties Programme and others involved in the day events, will each win a prize of £150 cash.

The motions up for debate are:

IDEOLOGIES AND BELIEFS:“A secular society should not prevent people from acting on their religious beliefs”

TERRORISM: “Protecting the public from terrorism should come before civil liberties”

CYBER-SECURITY: “We should not expect our online activities to remain private”

Debating Matters are excited by the opportunity that this follow-up activity offers in continuing some of the very interesting discussions that were begun on the Global Uncertainties day events. There is of course a tempting prize to win, but more importantly this competition offers students the chance to engage in a lively intellectual exchange with others.
