29 Jan 2018: Richmond upon Thames College win first-ever Debating Matters Championship

Debaters from Richmond upon Thames College stormed to victory at the London South Debating Matters Championship, defeating 11 other schools at St Mary’s University, Twickenham.

Teams from the FE college based locally in Twickenham have competed in Debating Matters for several years but put in a particular strong performance to be crowned London South Champions, impressing judges with their sound speeches and versatile responses to questions along the way. Richmond upon Thames College won debates in the group stages on whether controversial historical monuments should remain and whether a universal basic income is a possible solution to the UK’s problems, before besting Debating Matters newcomers DLD College in the first semi-final on online privacy. The final proved a hard-fought affair with Richmond upon Thames College going head to head with Godalming College on the topic of populism. Eventually, after a tough deliberation, the judges returned to the impressive Waldegrave Room and announced Richmond upon Thames College the winners.

Though only one team could be overall winners, all the competing schools made interesting and provocative points from the floor throughout the day. M’balu Bah from Ravensbourne School particularly impressed the judges and was awarded the prize of Best Individual on the day.

Debating Matters would like to thank all 12 competing schools: Ravensbourne School, Harris Westminster Sixth Form, Invicta Grammar School, Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School, Putney High School, DLD College, Godalming College, Stationer’s Crown Woods Academy, Riddlesdown Collegiate, Richmond Upon Thames College, Ursuline High School and St John’s School.

We also would like to extend a big thank you to our hosts and partners St Mary’s University for their support of the London South Championship. We would also like to thank all the judges who joined us on the day.
