  • Sir Alan Steer

    Retired headteacher and ex government adviser on education

    Sir Alan was headteacher of Seven Kings High School, one of the leading state schools in the country, from 1985 to 2008. In 2005 Sir Alan was asked to chair a group of teacher practitioners to investigate issues of school behaviour and discipline. The report of the group was published in October and immediately endorsed by the government and all the teacher professional associations. Sir Alan has been a Pro Director at the Institute of Education and was a member of the National Council of Educational Excellence established by the Secretary of State in July 2007.  He is a member of the Ofsted Board and a director of Teaching Awards for whom he is also a national judge. In the autumn of 2007 he chaired the 8-13 age range expert group which made a substantial contribution to the Children’s Plan which was published that December.  In April 2009 he concluded a review into school behaviour on behalf of the Secretary of State to assess the progress made since 2005 in implementing the recommendations of the Practitioner group.  Alan received his knighthood for services to education in 2004.  He is married with three grown up sons and an expanding collection of grandchildren.
