Law Student & DM Alumnus
Huddersfield University
Ashley is a student of the Master of Law and Practice degree at the University of Huddersfield, and hopes to practise as a solicitor in the coming years. Ashley says of his experience as a Debating Matters alumnus: “Without doubt, Debating Matters is a competition like no other, and as it has done for hundreds of students across the country, it captured my imagination when I participated in 2008/09. Debating is a skill which is currently in the forefront of the national attention, with debates now helping to decide issues such as who runs the country, and who should ‘carry the can’ in situations which are politically fired. It is vitally important that as young people we learn valuable skills in order to enable us to better understand ourselves and the world around us; Debating Matters does this. I felt so passionate about the cause and competition, that I didn’t want my experience to end. The Alumni network has enabled me to continue my love affair with the competition and also, more importantly, to offer guidance and support to competitors. I’ve also been trained both as a chair and judge, and this has given me an insight further into the competition, and also opened the door for expansion as Debating Matters brings its charm to a wider and wider cohort of students every year. This is fantastic news.”
