CavanaghProfessor Dave Cavanagh
Head of Communication and Public Engagement
Institute for Animal Health
Initially from Leeds, Dave read Microbiology at the University of Reading where he became excited by viruses. He went to the Animal Virus Research Institute at Pirbright, Surrey, where he investigated foot-and-mouth disease for his PhD. After a couple of post-doctorate research spells in London and Birmingham, he went to the Institute for Animal Health’s Houghton Laboratory in Cambridgeshire, where he studied viruses in poultry. In 1992 Dave transferred to the Institute’s Compton Laboratory in Surrey, where he was head of the Coronavirus Group. He swapped his lab coat for a Communication and Public Engagement role in 2007. He likes being involved in Debating Matters because he can listen to other people doing the talking for a change.
