Strong Ideas; Making Theatre Gaining Skills
Hilary left school at 16 and her theatre career began in lowly back-stage work where she learnt the value of offering to do all the jobs that no-one else fancied. After a period in theatre administration Hilary secured the post of Director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and ran the world’s largest festival for five years. Hilary then spent 8 years as Executive Director of Greenwich Theatre where she created the Greenwich Musical Theatre Academy, a unique industry-based training institution offering free tuition to aspiring musical theatre students from disadvantaged areas of South and East London. In 2011 she established her own company – Strong Ideas Ltd – which developed accredited training programmes for young people. Last year, Hilary set up Making Theatre Gaining Skills CIC which now delivers the theatre-based employment skills training across Hampshire and West Sussex. She continues to work as a freelance producer, arts consultant and occasional comedian.
