PEOPLE

  • Dr James Panton

Lecturer in Politics and Political Theory

St John's College and Balliol College, University of Oxford

As well as lecturing at Oxford, James is also a founder member of the radical humanist campaigning network, the Manifesto Club.  With the Manifesto Club James has lead campaigns: against the creeping growth of ‘booze bans’ in public places around the UK, in defense of the freedom of cheap flights, and against the beaructatic ‘vetting’ of adults who work with children and vulnerable people. James’ academic research focuses on recent historical and cultural understandings of politics, rights and democracy. In 2006 James was a founder member of Pro-Tests, the pro-animal research organisation at Oxford University. He is the author of a number of academic articles; co-editor of the book Science versus Superstition: the Case for a New Scientific Enlightenment (Policy Exchange, 2006), and writes and broadcast regularly in the media on issues around politics, democracy, education and civil liberties.
