    After leaving school Jane joined the civil service and then left to study at Liverpool University where she gained a first-class honours degree in social, economic and political studies, specialising in education and focusing her dissertation on the education of girls. She began teaching in further education colleges before moving into secondary schools as a teacher and eLearning specialist and then as a tutor in offender education, returning to adult education until recently. She gained a diploma in proofreading and copywriting so is currently taking a break from teaching and working part time as an academic proofreader. She enjoys engaging in topical debates at the Manchester Salon and writes occasional theatre reviews and articles about current affairs.
