    After competing in the Debating Matters Competition in 2007/08, Joel spent a gap year studying and volunteering in the Middle East. Whilst there he worked on the Documentary film, ‘Where Is My Solomon?’, about African refugees living in Tel Aviv. He’s currently studying politics at SOAS, the School of Oriental and African Studies and has previously been an intern at the online magazine spiked , writing for them and other publications including the Independent, openDemocracy and Culture Wars on a range of issues such as international politics, freedom, education and the arts. He now helps to organise the Battle of Ideas conference, where he is convening a series of debates on international relations.
