    University of Derby

    Jonathan was Derby’s first Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic), seeing the former college through gaining University status and a more than six-fold expansion. He studied Physics at Birmingham, Philosophy at Sussex and has since held various academic posts across several Faculties and later as Dean of Humanities at Middlesex University. Jonathan was deeply involved in the development of the new Polytechnics and served on several national bodies. He has also served as an external examiner and research ethics adviser at several universities; thrown the hammer for Hertfordshire; chaired Derby Playhouse, Derby Chamber Music Society, and Derby Multi-Faith Centre; and has been a Deputy Lieutenant for Derbyshire since 1994. He is currently writing mini-monographs on figures associated with the Midlands Enlightenment. In 1966 he was a member of an English Universities Debating Team which travelled to Berlin.
