LobleyDr Martyn Lobley
GP and journalist
NHS
Martyn has been an NHS GP since 1985 and started writing funny stuff seriously after a sabbatical as a “proper” medical news journalist. Since the late 1990’s he has been one of the two writers behind Dr Tony Copperfield – as seen in the medical press, The Times’ “Body & Soul” supplement and most recently on the shelves of all good bookshops. He writes under his own by-line for national newspapers (most recently for the Daily Mail) and for patient-oriented websites. His interest in evidence-based medicine means that he occasionally helps out at Sense About Science where he is viewed as the poor man’s Ben Goldacre. He was, for a little while, a stand-up comedian in the same class as Jimmy Carr and once, inadvertently, acted as warm-up man for Frank Skinner.TV appearances include “Prof. Regan’s Medicine Cabinet” and “Horizon – Pill Poppers” (both for BBC2) and on a variety of TV news channels. A bewildering number of junior researchers at Endemol, Silver River and the BBC appear to have him on speed dial. He’s appeared on virtually every radio station in the UK, if only to plug the book, has exchanged wisecracks with Jeremy Vine and faced up to the “A” team of James Naughtie and John Humphrys on the Today programme. He was named as the MJA’s “Medical Journalist of the Year” in 2005 and was delighted to be asked to present the awards themselves in 2011. The book, “Sick Notes” was, albeit briefly, an Amazon #1 Best Seller in 2010. He has supported Manchester City since childhood and sees no good reason to stop now.
