Michael studied botany and spent several years undertaking research on viruses in plants and insects before moving to science policy and administration. He has worked for the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution and at the Cabinet Office, but most of his career has been with the Natural Environment Research Council where he is responsible for infrastructure and services that underpin research and training in the UK and Europe.
