  Michael says of his Debating Matters experience: “I only got involved in debating when I got into upper sixth at school and the first competition we attended was the Debating Matters Showcase event in Coleraine in Northern Ireland. The unusual format with the judging panel meant that it was an intimidating place to start but from there on my team mate and I went on to become Ulster, All-Ireland and UK debating champions, so the high pressured nature of Debating Matters must have stood us in good stead! Since then I have enjoyed chairing a Qualifying Round, and being an individual judge, both of which I had never done before but which Debating Matters were very keen to get alumni involved in and turned out to be great fun at the same time. As well as the obvious additions to my CV, Debating Matters has also offered me the chance to stay involved in schools’ debating, which is often much more enjoyable and informative than university debating, and has been a good opportunity to meet new people and discuss new topics along the way.”
