    After graduating from Cambridge, and a year in industry, Michael taught chemistry in London secondary schools for five years. While teaching he studied sociology part time followed by a Masters degree at the University of Essex before joining the Institute of Education. His three books are Knowledge and Control (1971), The Curriculum of the Future (1998) and Bringing Knowledge Back In (2007) . They reflect changes in his ideas and a continuing interest in the role of knowledge in education. Michael has lectured in many countries and been involved in educational reforms in South Africa since the early 1990s. He has just finished leading a project for the ILO in Geneva on qualification frameworks. Michael is a Fellow of the City and Guilds and has an Honorary doctorate from the University of Joensuu. He has two daughters and in his spare time reads detective novels, plays golf and goes to the cinema.
