  • Mike Thompson

Aimhigher Birmingham and Solihull Area Coordinator

    University of Birmingham

As the first in his family to go to university, Mike is personally aware of the transformative effect higher education can have, and has dedicated much of his career to making the opportunity available to more young people. As Head of Student Services at Hereward College he coordinated support services for some of the country’s most significantly disabled students, and managed one of the first national projects to widen participation in higher education. As Head of Learning and Employment at Birmingham Rathbone Mike went on to manage 4 training centres, enabling over 1,000 of the city’s most disadvantaged young people to access learning opportunities each year. Mike now leads a £4 million partnership of Birmingham and Solihull schools, academies, colleges and universities. During the 7 years that Aimhigher has been active locally the number of young people from highly deprived communities entering university has increased by 43%.
