Sir Netar is Professor Emeritus of Renal Medicine in Manchester. He was High Sheriff of Greater Manchester 2002-2003 and was Medical Director of the National Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence/Merit Awards, President of the Renal Association, HMG Adviser on renal disease, President, Nephrology Board at the Union European des Mèdicins Specialistes and Chairman of the European Dialysis and Transplantation Association Registry. Netar is a Fellow/Honorary Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (London) Edinburgh and Ireland and of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was Inaugural Fellow of the British Renal Society 2003 and first holder of a Lifetime Achievement Award for Asians 2003 (Jewel Awards). He received the Medal of Honour of Manchester University in 2014. He has been President of the Manchester Medical Society and is President of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society.
