Illustration Student
University of Plymouth
Rae is studying Illustration at the University of Plymouth and hopes to go on to become a children’s book illustrator. She says of her experience of Debating Matters: “I first got involved in debating last year when I was invited to join my school’s debate team. We’d never been involved in the Debating Matter’s competition before and it was certainly a learning curve for us all, but we banded together and helped each other with research and recited our opening statements to anyone who would listen. When the day came I was terrified and I was sure we wouldn’t win, but luckily the debate we’d been given was right up my alley: manned space travel. Astronomy and speculative fiction is my number one hobby and I managed to win over my very talented competitors, despite arguing the opposite of what I actually personally believe. The Debating Matters competition has not only helped me build confidence in public speaking but also taught me the skills I need to back up my arguments in a calm and collected way, perfect for convincing my university tutor why I didn’t use watercolour paint when he wanted me to!”
