Roger Goodman is an anthropologist by training and has been the Nissan Professor of Modern Japanese Studies at the University of Oxford since 2003. He has published widely on many aspects of Japanese education (in particular high schools) and social welfare institutions (in particular on child protection systems). He is currently writing a monograph on the changes that are taking place in Japanese higher education. He was head of the University of Oxford’s social sciences division for almost ten years before becoming the sixth warden at St Antony’s College in October 2017. He is a fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences and has been the chair of Academy’s Council since 2015.
