    English Student & DM Alumnus

    University College London

Rupert is studying English Literature at University College, London. He says of his experience as a Debating Matters alumnus: “When my school first entered the Debating Matters competition in 2008, I only had experience of British Parliamentary Debating to compare it with; but the comparison was so so flattering that my school registered for the 2009, and I stayed on as an Alumnus this year. The format is less artificial, so that the performance of ideas dominates the performance of words and emotions. As an English student, I ought to add that elegant, emotional words aren’t bad in themselves; but in Debating Matters, as far as I’ve seen this year, the speeches never amount to faberge eggs of attractive, hollow speech. The atmosphere of concentration is as valuable to an alumnus as a competitor.”
