Russell is a semi-retired business advisor. He left school at 16 and joined a firm of gilt-edged brokers in the City of London where he worked for 10 years. During this time, he joined an airborne unit of the Territorial Army and experienced both parachuting and injuries, influencing his decision to give it up. To escape a City career, Russell attended night school to study for A Levels, attended Southampton University studying economics and sociology. After graduating, he joined Price Waterhouse, and qualified with them. After which he left to follow a career in business, specialising in small and medium sized companies. He enjoys squash, hockey, golf, cricket and sailing.
