Stephen got into debating when his secondary school started a debating society: they entered the Cambridge Union schools’ competition in 1999 and finished as the highest-placed state school. That experience encouraged him to apply to Cambridge, where he read history at Emmanuel College, and was eventually elected President of the Union himself. He also wrote a history of the Union which was published in 2009. Since graduating, Stephen has worked in politics – including in the Conservative Research Department, where he helped to prepare David Cameron for Prime Minister’s Questions; at the Centre for Policy Studies, a centre-right think-tank; as National Organiser of the No campaign for the referendum on the Alternative Vote; and as special adviser to the Home Secretary. He stood for Parliament in the 2010 general election in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, close to where he was born.
