White Rose College of Arts and Humanities
After some experience of judging in the Debating Matters qualifying rounds as an undergraduate at King’s College London Tom set about working with West Sussex County Council to launch and facilitate an inter-school debating competition at home. He enjoyed three years working on the project and was able to work with some incredibly bright and gifted young people, as well as the enthusiastic and hard-working volunteers from our local community, who made the events work. Tom has now relocated to darkest Sheffield and having completed my MA in Early Modern History is about to start a PhD project funded by the White Rose College of Arts and Humanities. Tom’s research considers the material culture of the home between approximately 1690 and 1730 and ultimately considers two ‘big questions’: Why did people buy the things that they did? What was the relationship between actors and objects in this time period? When not commenting on objects in museums I can normally be found playing in boats – although the geography of Sheffield often makes the latter slightly more challenging.
